A decade ago, charging a smartphone meant plugging into a 5W brick and waiting nearly two hours for a full charge. Manufacturers began racing to cut that time, and Qualcomm's Quick Charge was among the first widely adopted fast charging protocols to reshape consumer expectations.
In the years that followed, brands rolled out their own proprietary systems: OPPO's VOOC and SuperVOOC, Huawei's SuperCharge, Xiaomi's HyperCharge, and more. This fragmentation frustrated shoppers because a charger from one brand rarely delivered full speed to a device from another. The USB-IF's Power Delivery (PD) standard eventually gave the industry a common language that solved much of this problem.
Today, USB PD 3.1 supports charging up to 240W, a number that seemed unrealistic just five years ago. Gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology has made it possible to pack that much power into adapters small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, while also cutting heat output and boosting overall efficiency.
