USB-C Standardization: One Connector, Many Different Capabilities

The European Union's decision to make USB-C mandatory for smartphones, tablets and many small electronics has largely ended the long-running chaos of incompatible cables. Consumers no longer need a different cable for every brand, since one connector shape is now shared across most devices.

But a shared connector shape does not mean shared internal technology. Two USB-C cables that look identical can behave very differently: one might top out at 60W while the other handles up to 240W, and one might only charge while the other also carries USB4-speed data.

That difference comes down to internal wire gauge, the amount of copper used, and whether an e-marker chip is present. Above 60W, a cable without an e-marker chip cannot safely negotiate with the device, so the charging speed gets capped automatically as a safety measure.
