Wireless charging has become a near-universal feature on modern smartphones thanks to the Qi standard. From the user's side, it is as simple as setting the phone on a pad, no more plugging and unplugging a cable.
Physics still draws a clear line here: wireless charging is generally less efficient than wired charging, because energy transferred via magnetic induction between coils loses some of itself as heat. That is why a wireless charger and a wired charger rated at the same wattage rarely perform the same, the wireless one tends to run slower and warmer.
That said, the technology keeps advancing. Beyond simple pads, charging surfaces are now being built into desks, car consoles and even furniture. Some research is exploring 'true wireless' charging that works from a few centimeters away, though efficiency and safety issues still need to be solved before that becomes mainstream.
In the near to medium term, the most realistic progress will be faster wireless charging speeds and magnetic alignment systems like Qi2 becoming standard. Wired charging will likely stay dominant for high-power scenarios such as laptops or fast phone charging, but wireless will keep gaining ground in everyday use.
